A historical black-and-white photograph depicts one of the first types of public transport in Kyiv — the horse-drawn city railway, or simply the konka.
In the center of the frame is an open carriage drawn by a pair of horses, moving along the rails. A conductor in a characteristic form is visible on the footboard of the carriage, and passengers are seated inside. In the background on the left, the building of the Street Church rises majestically, made in the classicist style with a characteristic arched entrance.
The Kyiv konka began its work in 1891 and became an important stage in the development of the city's infrastructure, preceding the appearance of the electric tram. The picture conveys the atmosphere of the old city with its dirt roads, slow pace of life and the first attempts to organize mass passenger transportation.
