In Kyiv, there is a possibility of a partial closure of the red line of the metro. This is due to the emergency condition of the Metro bridge, which connects the left and right banks of the Dnieper.
According to the head of the Kiev City Council Standing Committee on Budget, Socio-Economic Development and Investment Activities, Andrey Vitrenko, the Metro Bridge has been in disrepair for at least two years. A budget has been set for major renovations this year, but it is unclear when they will begin.
“If the examination shows that the Metro Bridge will need to be closed, then, unfortunately, there will be a requirement to close this bridge connecting the two banks,” Vitrenko said.
Such a scenario could have serious consequences for Kyiv, which already lacks bridges for transport links.
“These are strategic objects for the movement of not only citizens. We have a martial law in our country, which is associated with certain restrictions and the need to provide resources for the activities of the Defense Forces. Therefore, this is a terrible event that can happen at any moment,” Vitrenko noted.
Earlier, the head of the Kyiv Metro, Viktor Braginsky, said that, despite the importance of repairs on the bridge, this would not affect the metro in any way.
“The Metro Bridge is indeed in a very difficult condition. It needs major repairs. But nothing critical is happening there on the part of the metro. We regularly inspect our tracks with special track measuring machines. That is, this is not a visual inspection, but an inspection using a special technology," Braginsky said.
As of today, there is no final decision on closing the Metro Bridge. However, if the examination shows that this is necessary, then such a decision can be made in the near future.
